Stoudt's Brewery, located in Adamstown, Pennsylvania, is just a corner of a vast family owned and operated empire that has grown from a single steak restaurant more than 45 years ago. The entire Stoudt's complex, the brainchild of Ed Stoudt, began to grow in the 1960s, when Adamstown began seeing a boom in antique dealers. It first began with Stoudt's Antique Mall in 1972, housing about 70 dealers behind the restaurant. A Beer Garten came next, along with the Stoudt's German Gemutlitlikeit Beer Festival. It wasn't't't that far of a stretch, then, to continue with that theme and creating one of the first microbreweries since Prohibition in Pennsylvania. Stoudt's Brewing Company began in 1987, creating medal-winning beers, including pilsners, lagers, and bocks. Today, Stoudt's Brewing Company today is a regional microbrewery, distributing to 10 states and making more than 10,000 barrels a year. Specialty and seasonal beers are available, with labels like Old Abominable Barley Wine ale, Fat Dog Stout, Double India Pale Ale, Weizen, and its flagship beers, like American Pale Ale and Scarlet Lady Ale. Free tours of the brewery are available Saturdays at 3 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. Tours begin in the restaurant lobby. In addition, the complex also includes a bakery, and its most recent addition, a German-style village, celebrating the Stoudts' and the area's heritage. It features a cobblestone square with storefront homes with mandatory resident shopkeepers. A local economy is booming in this village, and is continuously growing. There are also several hotels, bed & breakfasts, and campgrounds nearby for lodging.
