The Indiana Solderis' and Sailors' Monument has an extraordinary history behind it and it was built in honor of the veteran's who served in the Civil War. In 1889, the first parts of the monument were built, providing the perfect foundation for the monument during the summer months. The monument received national attention and part of the ceremony for the monument even included a speech by President Benjamin Harrison. Visitors can learn all about the monument through the Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum nearby, which includes many artifacts from the Civil War battle and era. The veterans who served in the American Revolution were called the Hoosiers, and these were part of the group that served in the American Revolution. In addition, this conflict led up to other wars including the Mexican-American War, War of 1812, Civil War and the Spanish American War. Visitors will be excited to know that the memorial had a famous designer by the name of Bruno Schmitz, and it was completed in 1901.
Visitors will now be welcomed by a large group of monuments surrounding the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, with four war leaders including William Henry Harrison, a general during the War of 1812 and ninth President of the US; James Whitcomb, governor of Indiana while the Mexican-American War was giong on; the governor of Indiana as the Civil War carried on - Oliver Morton; and finally, a successful commander George Rogers Clark. There is several different businesses in the shopping area outside of the monuments, including the South Bend Chocolate Factory, Hilbert Circle Theatre, Columbia Club, Christ Church Cathedral, Episcopal church, IPlL corporate headquarters, and many other places.
