The Robert Fulton Birthplace is not far from the Lancaster area, and it is a brick structure that has a special decor in it. It is also part of the list on the National Historic Landmarks, and this was a decision made in 1964. Visitors will find that one of the best times to go to this landmark is essentially from Memorial Day to Labor Day because special guided tours are given that provide facts all about the house and the man who once lived in it, Robert Fulton.
The guided tours are provided by the Southern Lancaster Historical Society, a special society that gives tours for those that request them. Visitors can easily located the house, as it is only about eight miles south of Quarryville, Pennsylvania on US Route 22. Visitors can learn all about Robert Fulton, who was originally an American Engineer who is most famous for inventing the first commercial steamboat. He was extremely interested in submarine technology growing up, and he wanted to find ways to provide mechanical power to a boat that extended beyond the normal sailing techniques. Fulton actually met up with Benjamin Franklin at one point and duscissed all of his ideas with his fellow acquaintance, inventor Benjamin Franklin. Fulton later met up with James Rumsey, an ambitious inventor who wanted to use steamboats in the industries. Fulton and Rumsey joined forces to design a steamboat that could go across the rivers. After meeting multiple acquaintances across both the US and England, Fulton decided it was time to build the steamboat. Fulton and his international friends joined forces with funding to create a steamboat many years later.
