Enjoy being surrounded by nature? Then visit Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Longwood Gardens is made up of over 1,000 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows. There are over 11,000 different types of plants present in gardens, more fountains than any other gardens in the United States, and educational programming. The gardens also feature over 400 shows per year.
The gardens were originally purchased from William Penn by George Peirce in 1700 as a working farm. In 1798, Joshua and Samuel Peirce began to plant the first specimens of the arboretum there, soon creating one of the largest collections of a variety of trees in the country. When the trees on the property were about to be cut down in 1906, Pierre S. DuPont purchased the property, and added to it until 1930. Today, there are 20 outdoor gardens as well as 20 indoor, with four acres of greenhouses. The property features flower shows, gardening demonstrations, educational classes, children's programs, concerts, recitals, fountain shows, musical theater, and fireworks displays.
One of the annual highlights of Longwood Gardens is the way the gardens are set up for the holidays. A light display is set up, transforming the darkness of the winter night into a bright, colorful, and fun park, with flowers, trees, plants, shrubs, and fields all decorated with lights. Wreaths and pointsettias, staples of the holiday season, are placed all around the gardens as well. There are also daily fountain shows set to holiday tunes. So reconnect with nature and enjoy the beauty of Longwood Gardens fields, flowers, and fountain displays.
