The Hans Herr House concentrates on the history of Lancaster and the surrounding historic area. This beautiful stone house has its own history and provides visitors with an entire community full of places to go and things to do while they're here. Visitors can interact with the local "towns" people who are dressed up in the costumes of the time. There is a blacksmith shop where visitors can watch iron and other materials being forged. An outdoor bake oven will show visitors how cooks put the elements of nature to use to fan the flames of the oven and provided fresh-baked goods to attract customers in the surrounding area. There are all kinds of treats and baked goodies for visitors to buy if they woul dlike. Visitors can also check out some of the shelters, including a barn and three different Pennsylvania German farmhouses that gave the original settlers a place to house their farm tools, cattle and feed. The 1719 House is the oldest building in Lancaster County.
Visitors can participate in some of the area events if they would like, including the famous Snitz Fest, combining fun fellowship and delicious food that was cooked in the original settler times. In addition, visitors can participate in the work of "settlers" who will show them how to make hand-made crafts in the arts of loom weaving, corn husk dolls, butter churning, threshing, blacksmithing, candle making, heckling flax, sausage making, wood fire cooking, shoe making, outdoor oven cooking and shingle making.
