The Landis Valley Museum, founded by George and Harry Landis in 1925, is the largest Pennsylvania German museum in the country. It has a collection of over 75,000 objects pertaining to Pennsylvanian German culture. You can wander through several outdoor displays that show daily life on a Pennsylvania Dutch farm. The buildings have been authentically recreated, and historical interpreters in period costume will explain the work of farmers and craftsmen. One of the most popular displays is the pottery shop, where artisans create beautiful works of unique Pennsylvania redware. Parts of the movie The Beloved were filmed here, and two of the buildings erected for the film are still here.
The Landis Valley Museum is headquarters for the Heirloom Seed Project, the focus of which is on seed preservation. Seeds that are preserved here are called heirloom seeds and have historical significance going back to 1790.
