Glenn and Shirley Eshelman started Sight and Sound Theatres in 1975 and currently operate two theatres: The Millennium Theatre, with 200 seats and a 300 foot wraparound stage, and The Living Waters Theatre, Millennium's older 700-seater sister. With about 800,000 visitors annually to the various shows on display, The Millennium Theatre is one of the most attended theatres on the East Coast. It happens to be Lancaster County's #1 Tourist attraction and America's largest faith-based theatre. Most visitors are white, senior citizens, middle class and Christians.
The Sight & Sound team are known for their great renditions of Bible stories utilizing dozens of great actors, elaborate sets, numerous costumes, live animals & animatronics and spectacular special effects: all of this has inevitably led to The Millennium Theatre being informally termed The Christian Broadway. The theatre screens plays like Noah - The Musical; Daniel - A Dream, A Den, A Deliverer; Ruth; Behold The Lamb and the perennial family favorite, Miracle of Christmas.
The play, Miracle of Christmas, exceeds all other productions of Sight and Sound in popularity and sales. It covers the entire Christmas Story in 2 1/2 hours. From the betrothal of Mary & Joseph through their tumultuous journey which placed them in a unique position in history, viewers are made to experience the joy & sorrow as well as peace & turmoil of their lives. The play also dramatically represents the Son of God and his journey to our world to redeem mankind. In the words of the producers from Sight and Sound themselves, "it is the ultimate love story". From the Nativity to the wire-suspended angels above, from the thirty-foot Christmas tree to the live animals, from the laser-lights to the original music: the $ 1 million production cost delivers a power-packed performance. Last season, the play attracted 4,000 viewers.
Next in line is a $ 5 million production of In The Beginning. Considering the drastic increases in faith-based travel or 'togethering', Sight & Sound should have no problems executing such a mammoth play: 30% of the tickets have already been booked.
