Crafts National at the Lancaster Museum of art

The Lancaster Museum of Art opened its doors in 1965, and has become a source of culture and education for the people living in as well as those visiting Lancaster, Pennsylvania ever since.  The museum is one of the largest cultural organizations in the region.  It is responsible for a number of works by contemporary artists, as well as the care of the Grubb Family Mansion.  The museum partners with city and county schools to show exhibits to students, giving them a chance to experience the visual arts.  It was originally located on the campus of Franklin and Marshall College, and was known as the Goethean Gallery.  In 1996 the museum moved to its current location, and became known as the Lancaster Museum of Art.

The museum has four thousand square feet of space dedicated to showing exhibitions, and can host a variety of different media.  This includes lectures by artists, panel discussions, and and workshops.  The museum even hosts art classes for children and adults.  The museum features sixteen different exhibitions per year, covering regional, national, and international works.  One of the past events at the museum was the Crafts National, which features contemporary crafts from around the country.  Most of the exhibits the museum shows are not permanent, but temporary or travel exhibits.

The Grubb Family Mansion, which is now the home of the Lancaster Museum of Art, is one of the most intact Greek Revival designed homes in the region.  Built in 1846, the architect was never discovered.  The Grubb family was big into the arts, owning paintings by Rembrandt Peale, Thomas Sully, and St. Memin.  If you're looking for the cultural arts of the Lancaster region, look no further than the Lancaster Museum of Art, the cultural and educational center of the city.
