Day Trip to Philadelphia, PA

If you drive east from Lancaster in Highway 30, you will reach Philadelphia in just about an hour. With Philadelphia's historical significance, culture, and many attractions, Philadelphia is a great spot for a day trip from Lancaster.

The Philadelphia Zoo first opened its gates in 1874, giving it the distinction of being the first zoo in the US. Today this zoo is home to more than 1,300 animals including a large number of endangered species. From Monkey Junction and Carnivore Kingdom to Bird Valley and the African Plains, the beautiful exhibits will remind you of the animal's natural homes. The zoo also boasts a Children's Zoo where little ones can ride a camel, and pet and interact with the animals.

After some time at the zoo, take the family over to the Please Touch Museum. This interactive museum is geared towards families with children. It's hands-on activities include Barnyard Babies, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the Supermarket, and more. There is also a popular Please Touch Playhouse, featuring regular twenty minute performances each day.

While you are visiting this historic city, make some time to visit some of its most historical attractions. Independence Hall sits on the corner of 5th Street and Chestnut. This historic building was built in 1791 and was the site of the US Supreme Court for many years. This site also marks the spot where the Declaration of Independence was signed. The easiest way to explore Independence Hall is with a guided tour of the 55 acres of city blocks known collectively as National Historic Park. Tours depart every fifteen minutes and include visits to this hall and twenty other historical buildings on the complex. The tour will take you to the Liberty Bell as well, a bell whose tones famously rang out on July 8, 1776 as the Declaration of Independence was read. Other sites visited on the tour of National Historic Park are the Congress Hall, First and Second Banks of the United States, Old City Hall and more.

After a busy day of sightseeing, you will want to grab a bite to eat before you head back to Lancaster for the evening. The Melrose Diner is a popular, family-friendly restaurant in the heart of the city. This famous restaurant has been an institution in the city for years, and features cozy booths, wait staff in old-fashioned brown and white uniforms, and a full line-up of delicious American diner-style fare.

Don't miss your chance to explore all that Philadelphia has to offer with a day trip from Lancaster!
